No ethernet showing in TCP/IP

My G4 has worked Great until last night when I couldn't get on the internet. I DID get a MacPoet init error on start up an so I checked Conflict Catcher to see if any settings had changed.

I turned off the MacPoet extensions and rebooted.

No internet yet so I checked my TCP and discovered my setting had become PPP and there was no ethernet option in the drop down menu.

I turned MacPoet back on in Conflict Catcher and reboot again.

No change. I zapped my pram and got no change. I still have no ethernet showing in TCP. Apple Talk is not on.

Could my ethernet card have died overnight while the computer was off? I've had no power outages and my home is totally protected with a hard wired surge protector.

If I need a new Ethernet card, is it difficult to install on a G4? I've done ram and USB cards with no dificulty.

Thanks for any help on this!

I installed a new ethernet card but I still don't get ethernet as a selection in my TCP/IP menu. And NOW I don't get an Appletalk control panel. Message says it has no port to connect to.

    WTf is happening?

I reinstalled Appletalk and deleted TCP/IP and Appletalk preferences. This is all happening on OS 9.1. \

No clue. On OS-X, you need to make sure that the ethernet port is enabled. You can do this in the network preferences.

I discovered that a bad font named "CROW" had affected my ethernet function.

    Beware of bad fonts

They can corrupt all kinds of functions!

Good find! How in the world did you track that down as the problem?

I discovered the bad font after thinking about what I could have possibly done the night before I began having the ethernet problem. I remembered I had installed some new fonts ( I collect fonts as a web and graphic designer ). I have had problems with conflicts with fonts in the past. When you collect a lot of fonts, font IDs can get crossed and the resource forks can affect other software.

I was remembering the new fonts I had installed and pulling them out of my system folder but one font would not allow me to extract it, indicating it was damaged. I used Conflict Catcher to move it to the trash and everything worked fine after that.

    Thank Conflict Catcher creators!
