17" Powerbook inner surface gap

All 17" Powerbooks seem to have a gap of about 1 or 2 millimeters between the screen and the keyboard when closed, rather than being flush, as with earlier Powerbooks. The latch appears to be on a spring which keeps the lip of the Powerbook's inner surfaces from making contact.

What would be the reason for it?

Its normal mate, mine is the same, i think its so the keys dont touch the screen when shut. If the keys touched the screen it would transfer greece / grime from the keys to the screen, i think!
