What's a simple, free painting program?

I'm looking for a simple, possibly free painting program that allows me to cut and paste images, draw simple shapes... kind of like the Mac Paint application for Mac OS X. Photoshop and Graphic Converter all seem too complicated for my needs, I could never figure out how to use it.

the gimp should do everything you need. if you're a little bit familiar with photoshop you'll feel at home at once. (it lacks some pro features though)

If giba wants something simpler than GraphicConverter, then the GIMP is definitely not for him.

I was wondering the same thing a few weeks ago, and I found a software package that's being developed right now called Teal. It might not be complete but it probably adresses your needs.

Version Tracker is your friend. Search on paint or draw to find nearly all available applications related to those topics.
