If you have a 6800, do this now (last thread on this, I swear)

I've painstakingly converted this to BBCode so it wont be seen as a plug for my blog (which is only really up there to help when I can't find another source).

Preface

As I wrote in my The GeForce 6800 Ultra DDL & G5 Nightmare story, I've encountered a fatal flaw in the GeForce 6800 which disables booting from any copy of OS X without the 6800 driver. This includes the CD that came with your G5.

The Kernel Panic window will show up during the boot process, and you'll cry all the way to 1-800-SOS-APPL.

There is a way to avoid this, and it's very simple: modify your install CD or create your own CD for permissions maintenance, before you need them.

Making A New Install CD

First I'll start with the modifying of your original restore CD:

1. Create an image of your install CD using this method.

2. Mount the image, and run the driver installer that came with the 6800 on the CD. Don't have the installer? Well I've temporarily mirrored it here. (note, this link may go dead at any time).

3. Unmount the image, and burn it using DiskUtility.

Now, in order to use this CD to install or reinstall the OS, you must create a bootable 6800 driver install cd.

Creating a general maintenance/bootable driver install CD

This method will also give you a quick and dirty finder/dock.

1. Go to http://www.charlessoft.com/ and get a copy of BootCD.

2. Run the program to create an image.

3. Mount the image and DRAG the INSTALLER for the 6800 drivers into the APPLICATIONS folder on the IMAGE.

4. OPEN the installer for the 6800 drivers and INSTALL the drivers onto the IMAGE

5. Unmount the image

6. Burn 50 copies using DISK UTILITY and put them in safe places around your house

7. (optional) Give money to http://www.charlessoft.com/ because they just saved your ass.

With those 2 CDs you can do most anything.

Note: if you're going to install OS X, after you use your custom install CD, you must insert the other CD you created above and install the drivers onto your hard drive AFTER your custom install tells you to restart. It's a hassle, but don't blame me, blame Apple.
