New iMac (G5) and sleep...

OK, I love this new iMac (20"), but I can't seem to get it to sleep properly.

If I hit the power button, it sleeps fine.

If I select "Sleep" from the Apple menu it sleeps fine.

If I just leave it alone, the display sleeps in 5 minutes (as set in "Energy Saver"), but the entire computer does not go to sleep at the 10 minute mark (as it's set for in "Energy Saver".)

What am I missing here ?

Options are set to NOT wake for network access, or modem/phone ringing, so that shouldn't be affecting it.

There is NO screensaver active (well, it's set at 15 minutes so the computer should go to sleep before it activates and starts "using" the CPU... which seems to work, because even though the computer doesnt sleep, the screen stays black.)

So lets see what you all can come up with...

If you have bluetooth, that can wake the computer too. Go into bluetooth settings of system prefs. to not let it wake the computer.

    Hi KingOfSomewhereHot,

do yourself a favor, never use sleep at any time, it causes too many problems

if you are not using the computer - turn it off, and save power

if you are not using the monitor, (i am not sure if the new iMac has a switch, because i have still to see one, but if it does), turn it off and leave the computer running

now many applications quit when sleep starts, internet connections also, even when you have set it up so this does not happen, so don't use it !

i lost a huge download because of this "stupid" sleep, it was set to "never" but it did

I've never had a problem putting my computer to sleep ... my old iMac is set to "not" sleep and that always worked fine (as far as not interupting the internet connection).

I prefer full sleep to just display sleep, as that will allow it to be quieter and cooler while idle, but not have to go through the boot-up everytime I want to check eMail.

I'm having this same issue on my 20" iMac G5. I can sleep by selecting it from the menu, but it won't go to sleep after x minutes of inactivity. The monitor shuts off fine, but the computer won't automatically sleep.

Did you ever find the solution to your problem?

    worst advice ever!!!

I have four macs. I never turn them of. I've had zero problems with any of them. No imacs have a monitor button. They NEVER HAVE. You give advice in a mac forum and have obviously never been around an imac!

Sorry, but then you really need to be more careful about giving out advice.

Sleep is beautiful, it's one of the things that sets mac's apart.

Sleep on a mac is instantly on, it's brilliant, especially for laptops and home computers.

If you're computer is not turing off make sure the screensaver is turned off and the hard drive sleep button option thing is selected (I'm not at my mac till saturday so can't confirm what it's called). It should be under the screen option. My iMac G3 sleeps beautifully, although it does occassionally wake up! (umm)

I have a 17" iMac G5 and have had no problems with sleep. It works great and I only shut down when leaving it for 8 hours or more, not that it takes long to start up but 2 seconds as opposed to 30 is a bit better. The only thing with sleeping it at night though is that the pulsating light is so bright I have to cover it or it gets a bit annoying (lights up half the room).
