Do you have one of the "white" ibooks, I don't remember when they started selling those but, if so this is what the apple web site says:
"NOTE for 12.1" iBook: Your 12.1" iBook comes with 128MB of SDRAM soldered onto the main logic board. An additional, empty SO-DIMM slot is available for memory expansion and your extra memory ordered as configure-to-order will be placed in this additional expansion slot. You can increase your memory to 256, 384, or 640MB of RAM.
NOTE for 14.1" iBook: Your 14.1" iBook comes with 256M of SDRAM (128MB is soldered onto the main logic board and 128MB is included in the SO-DIMM expansion slot) Additional memory configurations of 384MB or 640MB are also available as configure-to-order for 14.1" iBook."
