Why do my new MDD's sound like jets taking off?
I just got 2 new 1.25GHz Duals and they will be booting OS 9 for now until Quark and Microsoft get off their keister and deliver some native software. But every once in a while (8-10 times an hour) they make this blowing noise so loud, people from many cubes away come to see that the fuss is about. I didn't think this was normal until I set up the other one exactly the same way and it does the same thing.
What the hell? The people these things are going to cannot work like this. I've set up every manner of powermac and none have ever made as much noise. Maybe if I got 50 of them together. Is this normal?

Kiss the profits goodbye from the the MDDs, then...
Not microsoft makes this extremley loud Macs, it's Apple. The airflow design of these boxes is almost laughable. For ex.: The "turbo" main fan uses its 20 watts of electrical power up to 90% for stiring up the air inside instead of cooling. It's like an electircal shortcut.
Only a little part of the air is flowing through the heat sink.
I've never seen such a silly thing before. Every cheap PC is designed better than this construction.
Shame on apples engineers and quality control!
I would really really like to discuss this with SJ
or like what he would say to this fault!

Personally, I hope you're right. As a stockholder, I hope you are wrong.
However, I hate the noise from my dual 1Ghz ddr Mac. If Apple released a faster iMac, I would be very tempted to sell this noisy box on eBay and try the iMac. I've owned Macintosh computers since 1984. The noise level of this one has been my greatest disappointment (including owning one of the original Newtons).
Two of my friends also picked up the new DP 1 GHz and neither of their machines are any louder. This may be a problem that is only affecting "some" machines.
This issue has been beaten to death over the past couple months. Yes, they are loud. No, people are not happy about this. Yes Apple should offer a replacement motherboard if this will fix the problem.
We've made our point, now lets move on people!!

I'm just wondering, what are you waiting for from Microsoft?

F-ing Outlook (Exchange support).
Check the reports there--some people claim that is Apple's position on the matter.
According to MacFixIt, Apple is acknowledging this as a problem, and offering to swap motherboards (as stated upthread). I'd trust them over MacInTouch reader reports on this matter, frankly. it seems like you should only have to do it if you're booted into OS 9 a fair amount of the time, which should limit the damage to Apple's bottom line, but I can see a lot of people taking Apple up on the swap just to be safe.
After all, that fan is only supposed to come on when the machine is in danger of overheating.

Because Apple is ignorant to this problem and does only cosmetic changes (the little quieter in OS9)
and
the community mostly behaves like "all is ok what is called a mac"
I now have decided to switch.
But from Apple to PC
where I can get bad boxes for about half the price.
This after buying 18 Macs personally and more than 100 for other people.
So this will cost Apple some $ in the future.
I just keep my iBook becaus it ist worth its price.
$25 for two fans, should be enough.
I know the problem, but only under OS 9 after a restart. then again, who uses OS 9 these days

The problem does only occur when you're running OS 9, or when you're running the machine in a boiler room.

Aw Christ, say it ain't so! I don't have time to wait on switching out motherboards. I'll be on the look out for an OS 9 fix but it seems unlikely...
What have I done that you are so full of hate?
All I can tell you is. It would be no pity to get rid
of any contact to such personally agressive posts...
I'm really disappointed 'cause I know Swiss people
as very kind and friendly people.
Maybe you're to young but I deeply want to tell you
that I find find this sort of post disgusting.
Has nothing to do with "netiquette".
Think oft this!
And now your decision to switch to the PC world only strengthens the impression that you're just one of these whiny bitches that you usually see hanging around the IMG forums or GameRanger, even if you could probably be their father.
So I'm very sorry to have dissapointed you as a "friendly Swiss guy" (generalisations never work, btw, I bet you know that as good as I do, so leave me alone with that "THE Swiss are blablabla", there's no such thing as THE Swiss.), but I have a very hard time enjoying people's posts who repeat the same statement over and over again, like a nagging kid that wants a sweet at all cost. We can't provide you with that sweet (in your case a silent stock MDD PowerMac), so stop repeating yourself and we may actually find another topic that is more interesting and that does not make anyone angry at anyone else.
If you can't stop complaining, at least complain with Apple, not with the users.
Thanks,
G-News
You say "pardon me" just to go on insulting me ("whiny bitch" etc.
Good style. Good character.

What G-news does'nt understand, is that he seems to be a fundimentalist Apple Quaker, with low social skills...

Enough tit for tat. I stop responsing to you. No matter what type of insulting me you will try.
And I go on posting what I think of is of importance.
Wthout to be leave. Especially from you.
Stop.
