According to some info on macrumors they said this:

"

Due to Apple's Titanium Powerbook using a slot-loaded drive, implementing a DVD-R in the Powerbook will take more time:"

So... If I buy a powerbook now and apple start shipping either DVD-R/CD-RW or DVD-RW/CD-RW slot-loaded superdrive for powerbooks next year, does that mean that I can use the upcoming superdrive for portables in my existing powerbook?

not likely. The case probably needs to be revised to fit a superdrive.

are you just making that up?

if it does come out for the Powerbook in the near future you will prolly be able to upgrade, just like you could to the CD/DVD combo drive last year. I follow all the powerbook and superdrive rumors and have heard NOTHING about the slim DVD burning drives requiring any case mods when they are finally available.

there are pics of a slim DVD slot load drive out there, and it is the same dimensions as the current powerbooks combo drive, when it will be available is up in the air.

I think rogue may have been talking about the current superdrives used in Macs which are too large to fit into any notebook.

Rogue may be right, but not because of the case. When Apple added the combo drive to the PowerBook, owners of the most recent 550/667 (DVD or CD-RW) models could get the upgrade, but owners of the original 400/500 could not. There was a change in the location of the connector on the motherboard, IIRC. (I think eventually there was a third-party upgrade for the earliest models.) Anyway, the point is, we don't know what or if internal changes will be made to accomodate the SuperDrive.

I think the odds are stacked against you, if you are a betting person.

This is one of those "can anyone read the minds of Apple's engineering and design department so I can purchase something that doesn't exist yet and add it to a current model that they might add later to a newer model that doesn't exist yet" questions.

I would bet against you're being able to do it. A SuperDrive PowerBook is likely to have a design overhaul with it.

I'm waiting for the SuperDrive inside model. I suggest you do the same. That is the fastest way to get one. We and thousands of others don't buy, Apple puts it in faster to get sales going again.

Apple is simply waiting for manufacturing to ramp up on the slot load DVD-RW drives. Rumors have that drive in a PowerBook by Spring. If they announce new PBs this Wednesday (November 6), That would put the SuperDrive model out about the time of the World Wide Developer's Conference in May 2003.

Can you wait that long? I can.

There's alway a chance that the next PowerBook will be SlotLoad SuperDrive ready and that Steve could use his Keynote to offer it BTO in new PowerBooks as his famous "one more thing" punchline. But I wouldn't bet the farm on it.

This is a very conservative projection. It will probably happen sooner. May 2003 is a worst case scenario.

You were right Flash. The Pioneer 1x SuperDrives can be retrofitted into a 15" TiBook.

I'm looking for the link to the webpage that shows a photograph of them along with their model number. BTW the 17" APB sports a 2x slot load DVD-R drive.
