Hi all,

first off i'd like to say hello to everyone because this is my first post here. Hello. :-)

Right, i just ordered a new 20" iMac G5 and was wondering if you could help me, i need to know what ram to fit because it's going to be coming with 256mb which is a bit low for the stuff i'm going to be doing. If you could tell me a good place to look for it online as well that would be a great help.

Thanks

Andrew

Crucial.com can tell you. Use their finder that starts at their homepage and follow their instructions. It would take only a minute or two.

You need 184 pin DIMM DDR-SDRAM PC3200 unbuffered, ~2.5VDC, non-ECC RAM. I said approx. on the 2.5VDC spec because I'm running Patriot RAM which has operating voltage spec of 2.6VDC +- 0.2VDC, which fits into the 2.5VDC guideline.

Also, if you get 2 sticks, get them matched so your memory buss runs at 128 bit width instead of 64 bit.

Here are Apple's official specs, from --> http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=86814

Learn what kinds of memory you can use with your iMac G5.

iMac G5 computers work with memory modules (DIMMs) that meet all of these criteria: PC3200, 2.5V, unbuffered, 8-byte, nonparity, 184-pin, 400Mhz DDR SDRAM.

There are two RAM slots. The maximum amount of RAM you can install is 2 GB. You can use RAM module sizes of 256 MB, 512 MB and 1 GB, in either slot.

DIMMs with any of the following features are not supported in the iMac G5 computer: registers or buffers, PLLs, ECC, parity, or EDO RAM.

Always follow the upgrade instructions for Memory and AirPort Extreme card installation as written. Never attempt to remove screws that are not listed in the upgrade instructions.

Also, since this is a US based site, most people were probably still asleep at 5:30 & 6:19 AM EST. Another note is it can sometimes take longer than 45 minutes for someone to come along and answer your question.

I can't believe I was rude enough not to offer everyone a virtual drink!

    What's everyone having?

I wasn't aware that it was a mainly US based site, I guess a proper look around would have shown this. :-) Sorry for coming accross rude.

Another question, what did you mean by getting the memory matched? It currently has 256mb so I guess i'll have to ditch that and buy two 512mb dimm's for it to work at its best?

Yes, unless you want to buy two 1 GB DIMMs . And you can always keep the factory 256 MB module since you never know. Oh, I almost forgot it, congratulations on your purchase and welcome!
