I may be wrong here, but I think "Remote control" in this context means software control over the network, through the same port as normal iTunes sharing. Perhaps, you can control a remote iTunes.app with your local one?
Just guessing, though, because, to be honest, I've never toyed with iTunes' sharing capabilities.
Did I miss something, or is the Apple planning to release an AirTunes remote control, which will be WiFi based (on port 3689)...
Upon starting iTunes 4.7 for the first time:
I got the same message and was equally curious... not sure what that means but im intrigued. of course for a remote you would need some kind of hardare receiver (infrared, radio or wifi) if inideed it points to a hardware remote.
A remote control is pure common sense. The problem is you'd need a way to navigate your library the way the iPod does. Anything less would be insufficient. How much would that cost? An iPod with no HD and WiFi.
wow if this thread lasts more than a week with people thinking this means an actual itunes remote then you should all just leave and never come back.
Well why don't you enlighten us with your all-knowing wisdom since it appears that you know something about what it is. I don't know what the airtunes remote is, but to me it makes a whole lot of sence.
i'd like to see a remote for AirTunes/AirPort Express, because then you dont have to go into the room with ur computer thats broadcasting on AirTunes to change tracks or playlists.

in the pic at the top of this thread, "remote control" is used as an action. this would be like controlling Airtunes from a powerbook over your wireless network.
Another way to say it would be "Remote control of AirTunes and music sharing will be prevented."

I think people get excited a bit easily! But a remote would be cool, because if you're using speakers in a different room you have to move to the room your computer's in to change the music, unless you have a laptop. You could always use salling clicker as a remote!
The one reason I'm inclined to agree that it's not an actual product is the capitalization. If it were a product made by Apple, the name would be capitalized, like AirTunes Remote Control rather than AirTunes remote control.
I would add though that I'd love a remote that worked with Airport Express. I currently use my laptop through a Airport Express to link up to my desktop that has my iTunes library on an external HD. The Airport Express is connected to my home stereo. So, I do get to remotely and portably control the music at home, but it's via the laptop, which is a little cumbersome. It's a little big and you only get a few hours of battery life before having to plug in. Still, it's better than having to go to the desktop to DJ every time. A remote would certainly be welcome, though.
Personally don't think that Apple will release an AirTunes remote. It's only a matter of time till the iPod get's some wireless connectivity. When that happens then you would be able to bypass computer entrely (if you wish) and play your music directly the iPod.
problem is, Bluetooth only has a range of about 10 meters. So if you have your computer in the home office and the stereo in the livingroom, Bluetooth wont work...
At the moment I do use a bluetooth phone as a remote, But for just playing music at home through your iPod would mean that you didn't have to mess around with the computer at all.

iPods are fine to navigate on a train but if you were in your living room the interface is too restrictive and slow to choose songs, or create playlists. I don;t think it would be very useful.

I disagree. I find the iPod perfectly fine to navigate through the songs. In fact, when you have a 38 gig music library, sometimes it's easier on the iPod than in iTunes. As far as the playlist thing goes, yes, it's true that that wouldn 't be graceful on the iPod. But as far as remotes go, I don't think creating playlists on a remote isn't really a feature you should be thinking about. What sort of remote controls would be comparable to that? I don't think that's a feature to expect. I just want to control what song is playing by being able to browse and select playlists and ot adjust the volume. That's all I need.
As far as the BT phone idea, it is pretty cool, but not quite the solution I'd like. Plus, I'm pretty married to my Treo 600 which doesn't have BT, and I don't have the dough to upgrade to the 650. It is nifty though for those who have the equipment.

I just find the lack of the search feature on the iPod too restrictive. If you could search it would be a lot better. I have a Tungsten T3 - you can search on that, it's a bit slow though! I'm too picky
