Hi all,

I'm about to make a purchase, but the ability to use monitor spanning is important.

Are there reliable hacks out there that will enable the currents iBook and iMacs to span, rather than mirror?

If so, any relevant links would be appreciated.

thx

Yes- I have my iMac G5 hooked up to a 15" Samsung LCDTV and its great! I love working in Photoshop with them.

    Thanks for the quick reply.

What is a "worse case scenario" with one of these hacks -- if it goes bad?

I understand the warranty thing. I was curious about what physical problems could result...like overheating the card, etc.

iBooks have tended to use the identical card to the prior rev of PB*, where full spanning works and isn't reported to cause any overheating or damage.

If the same cards ran fine 6 months prior in similar form factor, there is almost no chance of 'damage' from uncrippling them to attain the same functionality.

This isn't the same as overclocking... these GPUs were/are rated for spanning, so you aren't "pushing" them beyond their capabilities, merely re-enabling something Apple has switched off for product differentiation reasons.

*Not every time, but IIRC the Screen Spanning Hacks are built with this in mind.

Is there a monitor hack to enable higher resolutions than 1024x768 (for when you connect to a regular monitor)? If not, I wish there was one, more than the one that does spanning. I guess that could interfere with mirroring, but personally I don't even use that feature, either. I just want to be able to have a bigger desktop when/if I connect an ibook to a monitor.

The screen spanning hack will enable larger resolutions such as 1600x1200 on external monitors and perhaps higher, depending on the VRAM you've got.

The (internal) LCD will still only show 1024x728 (for a 12" iBook) or the max native res for iMac G5.
