I am now scared to buy an iMac G5

I really wanted to get one and I loved using it at the Apple Store, but it is a rev. A and I have been reading about many heat/fan/power supply issues that have kind of made me unsure.

Do you guys think Apple will fix these problems now, or would it be safer to buy a rev. B?

I really want a new Mac now, but I don't want to pay $1800 and then have to keep dealing with heat and fan problems and getting new parts and annoying stuff like that.

I think most long time mac users would agree that the Rev Bs have things fixed that were discovered in the Rev As.

my G5 20" is working flawlessly.

while 'most' first versions of Apple hardware are fine, they usually nail them 6 months later with the Rev.B versions. You can see that with just about any of their products.

I'd be pretty sure that January will mark a RevB iMac. Thats about 5-6 months after first announcement/release, so, it jives

Unless you are in a hurry i would wait for the next revision but there is only 1 problem Apple has moved to a 9 - 12 month update cycle so it could be a long wait. I would guess with the next update we will see a 2.0 G5 and a better video chip.

I'm not in a hurry but the only computers we have in our house are my dad's Dell and a 6 1/2 year old G3 tower. I sold my old G3 iMac about a year ago (which was a mistake) and I just wanted a new Mac to do music, pictures, the internet, and stuff like that. Maybe I'll just get an iBook or something b/c I would like to get something now, not in Feb/March.

just get the iMac...I understand your concern, but the chances are minimal that you will have issues...Get something that will last a while, and the iMac is a decent computer...

I would just get the iMac now. There are a few people that have had problems, but I'm sure there are more that haven't had any problems at all.

And if you do have problems, march it right back to the store (be careful to pick it up by the sides! ) and have them fix or replace it.

I haven't heard of more problems than you'd expect from a massive rollout. There are always going to be lemons.

iBooks now coming with AE built in makes them tempting bang/$.

You might get spoiled by portability and relative quiet.

A lot of times Apple fixes stuff without even changing the rev of the computer. I remeber the rev a 12" powerbook feet fell off and Apple fixed it in a few months without changing the rev.

I only have one foot left on mine.

I would imagine that using more powerful foot glue doesn't constitute a machine revisions.

So how long do you think before the issues with this iMac get ironed out?

What issues are you talking about? I got an iMac G5, and the fans are silent, the screen is fantastic (not even a single dead pixel, unlike a 19" Samsung LCD I got recently which has 5).

As far as I know, out of the hundreds of thousands of iMac G5's that have been shipped, a handful have had fan issues. I talked to the owner of an Apple reseller where I live, and he hasn't seen any problems yet, unlike some of the previous iMac's.
