How can the iPod Photo be so powerful to be doing those great transitions and transparency in slideshows (when Steve paused a slideshow, a transparent pause icon came up on the screen)? It seems to be a powerful little machine!

And how are mobiles (cellphones) able to work without being plugged into the wall?

They aren´t. Just like normal phones they have to be plugged into the wall once in a while. Mobile phones can work for days without being plugged into the wall. Normal phones only for 0.05 seconds.
