I ran across this link today...

It mentions that IBM us already using dual core in its server Power 4's. Since todays G5 is a stripped down power 4, I would think that the Powerbook G5 is not only a very real possiblity, but that it would be a reality come January 2005. IBM is well ahead on the dual core front in comparison to Freescale, Intel and AMD. With the tech on tap, you have to wonder how soon we will see it in Apple enclosures.

Interesting...

Also, it notes that the Power5 will be available in lesser GHZ frequencies such as 1.6 - @2GHZ.(sound perfect for a Powerbook?)

It would seem the Power4 has a short time left in Apple hardware and the "Power 5 Lite" is coming up. Interestingly, it also seems like the next gen G5's will be dual core.

Get with the program, dude. The POWER4 and POWER5 have been dual core since inception. The single core version of the POWER4 was (is?) just units where one of the cores failed at fabrication time, was deactivated, and sold as a single core unit.

What does this have to do with a portable G5 from Apple? Nothing.

What does this have to do with the position relative to the competition? Very little since the POWER4 & POWER5 dual core designs are part of a fabric of cores in MCMs with huge supporting caches and an architecture that won't scale to the desktop. Yes IBM will deliver dual core 970s, but it actually has very little to do with the fact that POWER4 has been dual core from the start.

And no, the POWER5 won't be found in Apple machines. Ever.

Wow, so harsh. Nice to meet U2.

Yes, the Power 4 was designed as dual core from the get-go, but the G5 is a stripped down version. Apple will want one type of PPC to deal with and it has to be dual core. That is the future. The Power5 or Power6. Power6 may be a way off...

    Ouch...

And as far as IBM being ahead in terms of dual core... well how can you argue with that?

indeed, this would make apples machines quite a few times as expensive as they are today.

Okay, you have about 18 months of basics to catch up on. Read old threads, do a few searches. You aren't talking about anything remotly new let alone newer than a year old and your conclusions are pretty worthless as they are based on so little current fact as that fact is non-existent.

Is that harsh? Pobably. Is it true? Definitely. And don't hold your breath for Power5-lite, There are a host of architectural issues that won't be cheap to address in order to make it something other than a kneecapped derivative.

Since the POWER5 is just an evolutionary update to the POWER4 core, it makes sense that future workstation class CPUs will be evolutionary too. Future versions of the 970 will have bigger caches, SMT support, updated processing units (int, fp, vmx) and multi-cores.

Dual Core is inevitable. It's simply a matter of pricing and positioning.

    Um,...

The current G5 is a kneecapped derivitive of the Power 4...

Sorry, but that is just the facts.

As far as threads, I don't need to catch up on 18 months of spec. This is here and now.
