Good time to pick up Ti800?

I would assume this is still a very good machine. If you don't need the Superdrive, and the slightly better video card, wouldn't this be a much cheaper deal (if you can find one) than the new 867 model?

The only bummer for the old one is the video card.....

    Radeon 7500 with 32MB.......

This is exactly what i'm thinking about. I was planning to buy the 800 discounted now, as i don't really need 200mhz or superdrive.

How much difference between Radeon Mobility 7500 and 9000 is there? They're both 32mb.

The Ghz model has 64MB VRAM while the low end has 32MB

The lowest price I've found so far is still $3059 for the Ti800.

I'd give it about a week or so before these prices start dropping to be competitive with the $2299 low end 867.

I wouldn't go for any Ti800 unless it was say $2000 or lower.

    Agree

That's no way to buy the old one at the price higher than the new low-end one....not to mention the new low-end is even faster than the old top-end

the radeon 9000 supports pixel&vertex shaedrs (it's a radeon 8500 on a smaller procfrom what I know), the 7500 does not. so in theory 9000 will be able to run Doom 3 nicely, the 7500 wont.

The 800 would be used vs a brand new 867, the 867 has full 1 year Applecare, RAM is dirt cheap via 18004memory.com, ok, the Airport card is nice, but you'd still need a base station. The Radeon 9000 even at 32 megs is far superior to the Radeon 7500 32 megs.

Looks like yesterday's top model is getting a haircut on the used market to the tune of 50%.

This thread cheers me up, concerning my Ti800 that I've had for... three weeks.

EDIT: The new graphics card, being "far superior" and all, isn't much of an improvement with Quartz Extreme, is it? I'm not a Mac gamer, besides WarCraft, which is hardly intensive...

SmallDog has some refurbished Ti800's for $2179.

Not sure if this is a good deal. Consider that you get an airport card with it.

By the way, did the old 800's have 256K of L2 cache?

If you're not a gamer, a Radeon 7500 vs. Radeon 9000 won't make a huge difference. My dual 500 with a standard Radeon Mac Edition 32 MB and 768 MB of RAM gets choppy once in a while when lots of stuff is running, but otherwise it's fine.

When I replace the graphics card (maybe a year or so from now) I may get a used 8500. Apparently those are better than the 9000.

I'm kinda wonderin how much difference the 7500 vs 9000 will be too since I'm not a hardcore gamer but like to do graphics work. I REALLY want a Powerbook, but they are just so expensive and you don't get as much power, even though that's understandable.

Luca- If I were you I'd get a PC Radeon 8500 and flash it. Found one for $81 shipped that is going in my home brew G4.
