Apple Student Developer

Is a college student required to be taking developer classes to participate in the student developer program? Hopefully someone with experience in this area can clear this up for me since I've heard both ways. Thanks in advance.

    The Student ADC does not require you to be taking high-level CS classes, but the Hardware Purchase Program asks you to fax in your transcript. I've used my class schedule as proof before, so that works too.

    yea... what Eugene said... although I fear that the privelage may soon be revoked since it appears MANY are attempting to abuse it now as word spreads

    How is one to abuse the program? Apple came up with it. One has to show his/her qualifications. So how can it be abused? Just curious, Not asking for how to, just reasoning it out.

    I just faxed the ADC order form and signed the agreement, that it. I used it to order the Tibook/400, Airport BaseStation a year ago. No more 20% discount now.

    People are abusing it as a way to get cheap hardware. Basically, they're paying $99 to sign up for the program, then using the one-time ADC hardware discount to buy a system at significant discounts.

    No one is abusing this discount. This discount is about as old news as the 500mhz Powerbook. I've known about it since then, and so have numerous people at Georgia Tech as well I'm sure many many other institutions. Just glad I waited to use it now, for my first Apple.

    Of course people use it for the hardware purchase, it is one of the selling points of joining. Get students hooked on Apple development and hardware by giving them a break on the new toys. It's called bait n' hook.

    Sorry, you're wrong.

    It used to be a 20% one time discount, now it's just developer pricing. Besides that it's currently available to all college students, are all college students developers?

    first we complain that Apple needs to find a way to lower prices, while they do, we complain that they shouldn't...I am so confused. I am happy that Apple offers this kind of deal to students. How else are most going to be able to afford the best Mac? If this gets them in the door, then so be it. The ends justifies the means. Developer or not, if they sign up and pay, they are not being sneaky about it. Apple knows what is going on. It is a good program. Meant to be used...that does not translate into abuse.

    Apple knows students are taking advantage of the deal who are not developers. If they cared they would change the rule, this has been going on for over a year. If anything it helps Apple. Most of the people who are using the program would not buy a Mac if not for the program. Once they get a Mac they are likley to stick with the program when they leave school. If Apple cared they would just change it. I promise Apple is not losing money on the deal, Apple does not do anything that they know they will lose money on or allow something to go on indefinately if they are losing money. It is not abuse if you are totally following the rules and Apple knows and allows it. That is what we call use.

    Are you saying they don't audit the Hardware Purchase Program orders anymore? I coulda sworn you needed a 'key' in your ADC assets to get stuff from that store. If that's not the case, then it's still not such a big deal since Apple will just clamp down and revert to strict enforcement.

    Still, it's a bit lame to take advantage of a Apple's sales policy.

    I'm in the market for a new PowerMac and I'm a (Java) developer, but I never saw the use of the Student membership. I'm a bit confused. Can I sign up and get a 20% discount? If so, I assume that the discount is based on regular prices (not educational pricing)?

    BTW, I live in Europe. Is it any different for me/us?

    It's not strictly 20%, but there are set prices that fall into the 10-20% range and they are good deals. $150 off of the $999 iBook.

    $600 off of the $3000 PowerBook.

    there was a link posted in the powerbook thread. It was the US prices though. Go to apple.com, click deveoper, and then click hardware purchase program and you can see if there is a Eurpoe version. I think there is.

    "Actually as a college student follow this course of action if you want really cheap apple hardware. It is a little loophole I found a few weeks ago. As a currently enrolled college student you are elgible to buy a student developer discount. This entitles you to many things not the least of which is 1 purchase of apple hardware at the developer price which is insanely low. Check the prices for hardware at

    <a href="http://developer.apple.com/membership/usa.html"; target="_blank">http://developer.apple.com/membership/usa.html</a>;

    and click on the adc hardware link.

    The cost for a membership is $100 but just look at the savings. Right now I am pricing out the PB 1Ghz with 1GB of RAM and a superdrive for $2299. Isn't the college life grand."

    You must still have a managed asset key in your account for it to work. You only get ONE (asset key) purchase during your college lifetime. No matter how many times you sign up for the student developer you get the hardware discount one time and that is it. I believe this to be an excellent vehicle for apple to use in recruiting students. Along with really cheap hardware ONCE you get all the emails and developer tools AND possible scholarships. This if nothing else will expose those of us with pliable minds to have APPLE stamped into the wrinkles of our minds. I don't see any abuse here. The student will be more affected by the developer program and its information than apple will be by the student.

    I hope it's just me but I think the ADC discount for the 1ghz TiBook w/ Superdrive is gone. The price shows $2399 on the front page but when you hit select, the price goes up to $2999. Anyone experience this?

    <a href="http://developer.apple.com/membership/usa.html"; target="_blank">http://developer.apple.com/membership/usa.html</a>;

    click on the hardware link <img src="confused.gif" border="0">

    If you hit continue and get the review your order page, it prices it @ $2399. Looks like they are about to stop it, so get it while you can! The 1 Ghz with combo drive is now @ $2799 all the way through.

    Boy am I glad I purchased mine yesterday and called this morning to make sure it went through.

    I don't understand why they would get rid of it. This makes no sense at all. That would be the only way that I could afford to get a Powerbook and I am not planning on buying an iBook instead. Looks like I won't be able to switch if it really is gone. I am a computer science major that could benefit very much from having an Apple in my workgroup also but cannot afford it at $3300. Oh well.

    Gosh, how surprising...

    They're not getting rid of it. They're just preventing fraudulent buyers from taking advantage of Apple's 'honor code.' I expect the old system to go back in place eventually. Unless you have a hardware purchase key in your ADC assets, you don't get the discount.

    I imagine some people who knew about this and couldn't keep their mouths shut are kicking themselves now. <img src="graemlins/lol.gif" border="0" alt="[Laughing]" />

    Did you expect Apple to sit on its hands or twiddle thumbs while people cheated them? <img src="graemlins/surprised.gif" border="0" alt="[Surprised]" />

    What is fraudulent about legitamate college students who are interested in Apple computers? I knew it and I posted it and I will never kick myself as I am proud that I helped fellow economically challenged students enjoy the power and wonderful development platform of Macintosh. You never got a machine without a hardware purchase key in your account so I don't know where you recieved your information. The name of these forums are appleINSIDER not outsider so the people who frequent them should learn about different programs and features their favorite company is currently promoting. This will forever be a legitamate way for students currently developing their macintosh prowess to afford apple computers. I am amazed that someone who loves Apple as much as you do would find it reprehesible that new code warriors would find their way onto your platform. What reason could you possibly have for wanting fewer programs than there are already? <img src="graemlins/oyvey.gif" border="0" alt="[No]" />
