Speeding up a slowing computer

My PowerBook has suddenly begun to run?really?really?slooowww. All of the sudden, I'm seeing a lot more of the spinning beach all, and actions that were smooth (like hitting the space bar to page down in Safari) are now jerky.

Is there a disk utility I should run? System maintenance I should perform? Magic elixir I should brew?

For what it's worth, I'm using an 867 MHz 12" PowerBook G4 with 640 MB RAM and OS 10.3.6. Thanks.

You could always try running 'top' to see what's going on, or try Apple's own 'Activity Monitor', it's located in your Utilities folder. You can list processes by CPU, RAM, and Virtual Memory usage. It might help you find the culprit. If not try repairing disk permissions on your drive with 'Disk Utility', also located in Utilities folder.

I downloaded Cocktail and ran everything possible, and it seems to have really helped. Thanks.
