Too much works is dangerous, at least for medecine students
An interesting article : Landrigan C et coll. : ? Effect of reducing interns?work hours on serious medical errors in intensive care units.? N Engl J Med 2004; 351: 1838-48. © Copyright 2004 http://www.jim.fr
This study has demonstrated that too much work create more errors. A study involving medical students have been done. There was two groups of studens in the Boston cardiologic reanimation hospital. The first group was done it's classical 80 hours per week works, while the other group was limited to 60 hours, with more time to recover after a night at work.
Each student was controlled by a senior, who recorded all his decisions and mistakes.
The result was that there was 35 % more mistake in the group where the students worked 80 hours per week.
That can sound weird but it's the first time, that such a study demonstrated that too much work for doctors is dangerous for the patients they have in charge.

Doctors are happier, patients are happier-it's win win. I guess the urge to pay off the loans quick and buy a Porsche wins every time.
When you are a resident, or a student you have no choice. After that you have the choice. I work no more than 40 hours per week : I am my own boss. I don't own a Porsche either, but I am very happy without it.
