Mail won't send

For a while now, every time I try to send something from my .mac email in Mail it won't send. Whenever I try to send something I get this message:

The connection to the server ?smtp.mac.com? on port 25 timed out.

You can try to send using a different server. All messages will use this server until you quit or change your network settings.

What can I do to fix this? Thanks.

Does your internet service provider require you to send e-mail through their own servers? You may want to check on their support pages and see if that's the case.

The odds are it is the ISP doing this to you. Adelphia and Cox both do it. This is from the Apple discussion site.

It may be that your Internet Service Provider (ISP)

may have begun blocking port 25. This is done in an effort to reduce excessive

Unsolicited Bulk Email (UBE) originating from their domain.

The concept is that if all customers using their service must use their mail server,

the flow of outgoing mail can be monitored and anyone attempting to use their network

to send out UBE can be tracked down more easily.

You may wish to contact them to confirm whether or not they are blocking access to

all but their outgoing mail server. If so, they should be able to assist you with setting up

your email client to use that server.

I have to use several different SMTP's depending on where I am.

Same thing here. Using RCN I cannot send mail using .Mac unless I use RCN's SMTP server. I asked them about this and got confirmation. They won't allow sending mail using any server but theirs.
