How would PB667 compare to iMac700

I have the 15" G4 iMac, but now need/want the portability of a laptop.

I'm beginning to see some pretty aggressive pricing on the older DVI 667 Powerbook.

Given the decreased speed of 33mHz, how do you think the two would compare?

I figure the PB has these advantages:

1) 133 bus vs. 100

2) higher screen res

3) better video card?

What do you guys think?

Definately the powerbook will be faster.Has bigger cache size which of course makes things fast. And also you're more flexible with the powerbook. You can connect it to a crt and and choose whatever screen res you want..Don't even hesitate about the powerbook buy.Just buy it!!

    Okay then....which one.

    PB 667 or PB800

Would you spring $400 more for the PB800?

I believe it has double the RAM plus an Airport card (which I'm not sure I'll use, but possibly in the future)

If the 15 inch iMac was enough for you then the new iBook probably will be too. The new iBook actually has a better video card than your iMac. No doubt though that there are some great deals on the old powerbooks now though, I would spring for the 800mhz one. It is a much better performer, probably worth $400. The only caveat I would make is if you know you are going to get wirless internet, but not for several months. If that is the case you may not want to spend extra money on a 802.11b Airport wireless card when the much faster 802.11g cards will be available in the months to come.

I think a lot of people are underestimating the new iBooks...they are a great price and the new specs put them right near the old powerbooks, for much less. (Plus the new Radeon 7500 video card in the iBooks will allow monitor spanning; if not out of the box then through a hack)

Thanks for your advice. I have often and still long for a iBook because of it's ruggedness. Unfortunately, Apple's wisdom to cripple the video spanning (i'm not comfortable to hack), and the poor resolution on the 14" model, leaves me looking at a higher priced Powerbooks.

Ok, ok, how about we ban Apple products in general until such time we can resize our browser windows in real time, or itunes, or ichat, or ical, or any app for that matter. Here's one, try opening 5 or more websites with rich media content and not have your machine come to a halt. I'm sorry it's none of my business how you spend your money, but paying a arm an a leg for last years tech is not my idea of a smart buy. I love OSX, just not going to buy another Apple until they get their act together, this will never happen if you guys keep buying their current crap. <img src="graemlins/oyvey.gif" border="0" alt="[No]" />

I used to convince myself that iBooks ran OSX just fine... till I tried a dual G4 tower.

    Now I just laugh.

(and wish I had some spending money...)

Consider that a Dual G4 just about keeps up with single X86 machines, and that a PowerBook offers at best 50-60% of the performance of a tower (in intensive use/with multithreaded apps), then consider how much they cost, and you see just how lacking Apple's offerings have become. The iBook's prices are right, but they have some serious performance issues. The Powerbooks have less performance issues, but their prices are insane, especially in Canada, where the effective cost of ownership has actually gone up thanks to new insane price hikes on AppleCare. And the consumer desktops offer even less performance than the TiBooks (owing to no L3 cache and even slower 100Mhz FSB, compared to 133) Apple is hurting, big time.

The PPC has been a disaster for Apple these last two years, and they will need PPC970 performance across both desktop lines and the pro portables to even begin to adress the inadequacies of their current price-performance.

Just because you said that I have ordered a brand new PowerBook G4

Seriously, if you call the current PowerBooks crap you need to have your head examined - make a reservation for Matsu at the doctor too, while you're at it. please...

As much as I'd like for this to wake Apple up, it'll actually do the opposite. Probably to the effect of bringing marketshare to 1%.

I'm frustrated in Apple's lack of power (however not quite like Matsu )

But after 20 years of doing things the Mac way, there's too much of an investment to switch to PC's.

However, I have slowed down purchase decisions always hoping for Apple to quit pussy footing around and start offering so serious value.
