Mac OS X, with the firewall shut off, is exposed to many attacks, but is not compromised. As messieurs Acohido and Swartz say, there are a lot of Windows systems out there, compromised by various worms, that spew out connection requests to random computers in the hope of finding and propagating to a vulnerable Windows system. That counts for the majority of those so-called attacks.

Apple users/owners are blessed.
However, all this means is that as members of the Apple community we must *not* become complacent and think just cause it's unix it can't/won't happen or that somehow Apple, Inc. has all of the expertise on security. WE need to stay vigilant and keep *our* platform the very best. So if the firewalls needs to be turned on by default or whatever - Scream at the top of your lungs at Apple and let's get them to act consistently on security issues. They have done a darn good job so far...

Listing # of successful attacks might be newsworthy. This isn't.
