New 1GHz Powerbook Superdrive DVD-RAM?

Hi:

It's been several years since posting here as Appleinsider went dead for a while and I gave up. I had a ball posting here and discussing things when buying a new B&W G3 for my daughter.

Well now I'm waiting for my 1GHz Powerbook G4 w/Superdrive and 1gig RAM which I ordered from Apple Store on Nov 9th.

I've read in various forums that the Superdrive supports DVD-RAM (not confirmed by any postings I've read so far). If this is correct this would GREAT news indeed.

Can anyone confirm if the Superdrive supports DVD-RAM and operational under Mac OS X v10.2.2

Thanks in advance for any feedback on this issue.

This doesn't sound like a definitive statement! What I'm hoping for is for someone who has the new Powerbook w/Superdrive to say one way or the other.

    Thanks for chiming in.

BTW what makes you say "I don't think so" ?

Most DVD-RAM discs were caddy-loaded, rather than tray load, IIRC. I haven't seen a DVD-R drive yet that handles DVD-RAM, unless it also has a caddy system.

I really doubt the PBG4GHZ (how's that for an acronym?) has support for DVD-RAM.

It can play the single sided DVD-RAM disks you can take out of their caddy (required to write) but it writes DVD-RWs. What do you mean by the term "supports" DVD-RAM? If you mean "writes" no and why would you want to anyway? If you mean "reads" single sided DVD-RAM out of the cartridge, yes. That format is almost dead as a doornail Â?Â*one of Steve's bad bets in '99. He moved his chips to DVD-RW in January of 2000 with this SuperDrive series.

I like the DVD Ram I have on my duel 500. it is useful for backing up things as it is rewritable.

I guess the next thing is going to be DVD RW

The PowerBook G4 seems to be using a version of the Matshita UJ-815 that doesn't support DVD-RAM. It also doesn't seem to support DVD-RW from the Finder, Disk Copy or Toast, but somebody on MacNN claimed the iDVD swap trick worked...

    Hmm...
