Hosting a small website through DSL on my G5 iMac, does a router cause a problem?

I have a static ip address, and a fast dsl connection. I want to explore the apache web host software on my computer just to learn a few things.

I understand setting up the computer for web hosting is a piece of cake. However, what if you have a DSL router you are going through? It is a linksys router behind the modem. Does this cause any problems?

Does apache support front page extensions?

No clue on what Apache supports. As far as the router, you may have to forward port 80 to your local IP, check the linksys router manual for port forwarding (they may call it something different).

One thing to be aware of: Some ISPs don't want their customers hosting web sites at home, so they block port 80. You can get around this by using another port (8080 is pretty common), but that means users of your site have to use URLs like http://123.45.67.89:8080 or http://www.myDomainMappedToMyHomeIP.com:8080.

So far, it appears to be working. However, I never trust it since I am the computer the server is on. I am going to call my neighbor and see if he can access my website. This is SOOOO coool. Only on a Mac is stuff this easy.

I may even foward one of my domain names to it.

Thanks guys, I will report back.

I am defintely never going back to a Fulltime PC for my personal use. If you had this technology since 1997 then I feel like an ASS for using a PC.

    Thanks guys! This absolutely rocks!!
