Is it possible to use Airport's built-in modem to send and receive, or do I have to plug the phone line directly into my internal modem?
(Also, as an aside, do I need to keep the Internal Modem application open to receive faxes?)

uhhh, AFAIK the airport bs modems can only be used for internet access.
what OS do you have?
to receive a fax you need to have 10.3+ (IIRC)
all you need to do is hook up the phone line to the internal modem and configure the print&fax panel n system preferences...
Just keep your mac (and modem) on that should do it.
