Short battery life on PowerBook G4 - Apple won't replace?

I've had my PowerBook G4 Ti 1GHz for about 2 years now, and the battery now only lasts for about 1:15. I called Apple about it and they had me recondition the battery, but it didn't work, so I called back. I was told they wouldn't replace the battery because it's expected to deteriorate over time. I've got AppleCare, so I thought it wouldn't be a problem. Is that really their policy or was the tech guy I talked to full of it? This is the only time I've ever tried to use my AppleCare. I'm beginning to wonder why I even bought it...

AppleCare is just like every other "extended warrantee" in this regard, things that are expected to wear down (basically only the battery in this case... but you could include scratches) are not covered... unless they fail due to a defect. I have seen the program come in and save people a tone of money on other problems... but like any other extended warrantee, you are just buying insurance... not a solid product.
