Sorry, thread title should read "Apple To Form "Applemobile".

Found this fascinating story on line from CanalPDA.com. Sounds like a big gamble if true. But if true, what a surprise!

In a CanalPDA.com exclusive, a top Apple executive confirmed that the company plans to build its own mobile carrier. According to Albert Slope, VP of Apple's recently created Mobile Platforms and Services business unit, "creating our own mobile carrier is the next logical step in our strategy of providing the Apple experience to the users of our products. We believe that existing carriers are not offering the flexibility not the performance consumers deserve, so we have decided to move forward, providing cellphone users a full, personal communications and information environent, with the user-friendliness that has become synonymous with Apple's products and services"

"On the other hand", says Slope, "the sucess achieved by the iTunes Music Store has shown us the way to go: by selling songs to consumers at 0,99$ apiece, we have accumulated a valuable expertise that will be most useful for billing them talking minutes".

In recent weeks, many rumors have flown about the features of the new cellphones that Apple would be developing with other manufacturers, such as Motorola. A main profile as emerged of an hybrid between a conventional cellphone and a music player, featuring a large capacity hard disk and advanced calling functions, via a graphical user interface developed by Apple from Mac OS X, but adapted to a small-size screen.

Universal or closed?

It's still unclear whether the new mobile carrier (tentative name: AppleMobile) will be reachable with any mobile phone, or its services will be reserved for the iPhone family of cellphones. Also, still no word out on the ability of forthcoming iPhones to use existing networks, or a mandatory subscription to the new AppleMobile. Major telecom analysts are split on the merits of either decision: some of them say interoperability is key for having any chance, but others consider that betting on a closed environment, if risky, may propel Apple, if successful, to the top of the world mobile telecom market.

Apple's new mobile carrier will start operating as a MVNO (Mobile Virtual Network Operator), that is, putting its own brand, value added services and customer service on top of other carriers' infrastructure. The company is already in deep discussions with several regional and worldwide carriers. However, Apple does not rule out getting licenses and deploying its own network. Actually, it has already set ap an internal development group, working on network systems (repeaters, call traffic management), based on the company's Mac OS X operating system and Xserve rack-mounted servers.

I saw a post elsewhere that suggested this was a joke. Don't know for sure. Seems a tad far-fetched for Apple...but maybe not. Personally, I think Apple could make a lot of things better in various services and products (outside of computer I mean).

It turns out to be a joke, Spanish style. A couple of "go to threads" at the beginning of the article explain it to non-Spanish readers. There's no Albert Slope at Apple. If there was, he'd be fired pronto! Silly Season. Sorry for posting.......
