Powerbook power cable ripping

the power cable that attaches to the powerbook is starting to rip for me, the part of the cable that attaches to the white plastic part (that part that goes into the powerbook) is starting to rip, i guess because I use the powerbook too much on the bed, and the bendable part gets bended too much

has this happened to anyone else? I just put some electrical vinyl tape around it, the cable costs 80$ off the apple store

You can get them cheaper on ebay. I have used the old style on new books as well they don't glow but they work.

Applecare will replace the whole adapter if you have it.

It happened to me. Apple care took care of it but they sent me a 45 watt instead of the 65 watt. I called back and they sent me the 65 watt and let me keep the 45watt. It would be nice to see a bit more re-enforcement near the end of the cable.

Did you have Applecare? I didn't get it, will they make me pay?

Yes I have Applecare. We have 4 laptops at our house and they get a lot of use and travel. If your pb is less than a year old, it might still be covered without applecare.

I don't have applecare, but the same thing happened to my first power adapter. I bought a new one for $100 but instead of using it, I cut the wires of the old adapter and re-soldered them. It worked fine (and still does) but I decided to use it as a backup. I gave my second power adapter a homemade tension relief doodad that is working splendidly for several years now.

I don't know why Apple hasn't fixed this yet. The end of the plug really is subject to wear and needs reinforcement. This design flaw is so obvious and easy to fix I can't help but wonder if it was intentional. I know, I'm jumping to conclusions, but Apple really needs some above par beta-testers.

That's happened to me several times. I had one replaced, but they wouldn't replace one I had recently, even under AppleCare. They said it's caused by pulling it out by the cord rather than the thing that plugs into the computer, so it wasn't covered. It's probably true, but it still shouldn't wear out like it does.

I'm on my third power adapter-- each time for the same reason as you-- the cable would fray near the computer plug. I haven't had the problem since Apple switched to a sturdier design.
