JBL Creature: ANY GOOD?

I can't really listen to them, cause nowhere sells stuff like that. Best Buy, Circuit City, CompUSA whatever just sell the cheap stuff.

Well, the receiver is $220 so I only wanna spend 100-150 on the speakers. Is that too little a budget to get something that is pretty good? I could always start with a couple speakers and add on instead of buying a whole 5.1 surround setup at once.

Kef a British company makes a very highly regarded speaker called the Coda 70, I beleive it's more like $200 but if you could at all possibly stretch your budget to approximately that amount you'll get a much better sounding speaker.

Here are a couple of sites you can check out & ask questions:

In that case, I would buy any bookshelf speaker from JBL (s38 or N38), KEF, Klipsch or AR. All the mass retailers have demo listening rooms where you can try them out. Circuit city has dedicated sound proof rooms which I prefer to Best Buy's out on the floor layout.

later when you do decide to get a home theater system, you can delegate these to the rear channel and get a decent pair for the front channels.

Also check out paradigm.com, they have a dealer locater, there just might be a dealer in your town. Their line has small inexpensive speakers as well as $1,000 each speakers.

Ok guys, quit geeking up the thread

IS there a way to make the cool down-firing LED's on each satellite pulsate with the music? That would be cool!

The internal speaker on my DP Ghz QS pulsates with the music. <img src="graemlins/lol.gif" border="0" alt="[Laughing]" />

Just checked out those recommended speakers and they look pretty good. Only thing is, if I just bought these I would only have mains and I would be without a subwoofer and rears. Do you think it would be better if I go without and get the N38? 175W sounds pretty good....is that enough to complete blow away the kids on my floor? Probably not, but my old Sony stereo still gets me in trouble. I've heard good things about JBL, and the N38 is 114.99 right now at etronics.com (I think that's the best price...checking J&R right now). The main concern is getting the best match for the money. I've really wanted the Denon receiver since it came out, but then I have to get speakers. What is definite is that all of this will be hooked up through an M-Audio Revolution 7.1 PCI which I plan on buying the day the store has them in stock. I've found stuff like Acoustic Research speakers for $60 but I don't know if that brand is any good or just cheap crap. My other option of course is getting a 5.1 system with every included for around 150.

i'm considering getting the creatures, but <a href="http://www.gourdspeaker.com/speakerinfo.html"; target="_blank">these</a> are what i really want. too bad they cost waay to much. can you tell that the only thing i care about is design?

i like my creatures a lot. they can be quite pleasantly loud in my room while everyone in the next room is unaware (unless you crank the bass) which is why they were recommended to me and why i bought them.

My mom would be pleased to hear that. (Or not to hear that )

    Tiger,

Depends on your abilities to source money. Get the N38s now and build up the rest later when you have the funds. Downside? you will have to be content with listening to music and watching movies in stereo.

If you want the full theatre effect, get a 5.1 system. try to get a good brand if you can. All i could find for 150 bucks was RCA or Magnavox. You will need at least $250-300 for a decent brand that will also blow the kids on your floor away. try the JBL SCS 135 package. Polk Audios are good too.

I mainly listen to music and all I want is something that is a lot better quality than the built-in speakers on a Quicksilver and that I can CRANK. Not something too huge either. I figure hooking a Revolution 7.1 sound card to a Denon AVR-1403 receiver then hookin a pair of speakers up to that will produce good sound. I'm not sure how far I can stretch it....considering I've got other upgrades I need to purchase (like a 120 GB HD), but I don't think I wanna spend more than 150 on a solution. What I think I will do is just go to Best Buy and listen to what they have and pick out a 2-piece bookshelf speaker system at my price range.

What brands would be the best out of these for 2 speakers around 150?

    -JBL

    -Acoustic Research

    -Polk Audio

    -Sony

    -Yamaha

Am I missing any (that would be sold there)?

Get the JBL N26 if you can afford an extra $50 ($189.99) or the N24 ($149.99).

You will be able to hook up the revolution to your denon. use the co axial digital output/inputs and let the denon do the D/A conversion.

Ok I'll look for those when I make my trip up to Best Buy, probably not for a couple days cause I wanna wait till they have the Revolution in stock.

I'm about to pull the trigger on my receiver tonight.

This is absolutely ridiculous. I ordered them on December 18th and they were supposed to arrive January 3rd-9th. I knew something was up with the long estimated ship time, and when it didn't ship yesterday Amazon.com revised the ship date to January 18th- January 25th which means I won't get the JBL Creatures until January 23th- February 5th at the earliest. Bullshit. They'll probably revise the ship dates again when it doesn't ship.

    I'm canceling my order.

Are you kidding?! Go to provantage.com, they have the JBL Creatures for $86.75+ shipping.

I ordered them several weeks ago and received them the very next day, I'm listening to them right now.

I don't know why since the Creatures are good and everything, but I decided to go back to my old speakers. I guess I like having 4 speakers compared to two. I could always sell you mine

Thanks, Eman. I'm guessing you have the white ones to match your iBook? I'm looking around the web for silver ones that are not on backorder like at Provantage.com and presumably, Amazon.com. Perhaps the stock is intentionally low because of rumored updates at MWSF <img src="graemlins/lol.gif" border="0" alt="[Laughing]" /> . Seriously, maybe I should wait until then because new computer speakers may be released?

Personally, I heard the Creature speakers and i thought they were great. But when i heard the other JBL speakers (I don't remember what they are), but they are a beige color, they really don't sound rich. If you know what i mean.
