that post is for CD-R upgrades -- what I'm wondering is whether Apple or MCE will be able to offer Superdrive (DVD-R) upgrades for older TiBooks (like the 667 or 800 MHz models). Are there any hardware issues that would prevent that from happening?
aha! great! so that could mean that we can expect MCE to have an upgrade option available soon (as they have done for the CD-R drives in TiBooks and iBooks).
iDVD will work on any internal Pioneer or LG DVD-R drive, doesn't matter where it came from.

That is actually bullshit, Apple doesn't sell iDVD seperate from systems because they want people to buy new macs some Apple Apologist came up with the codec story.
The story Apple shares with dealers on the topic is "selling iDVD independant of new Superdrive equiped macs is not in ours or your best interest, we believe iDVD is a closer and is enough to justify the consumer buying a new mac"
However, that being said the iDVD 2 upgrade that you can buy from the AppleStore will work just fine with any DVD-R drive and without already having iDVD installed.

That is the only thing for me not taking the idea (purchasing an external dvd burner) to the next level!
I have not done 'any' homework on it yet - but this info of external burners not being compatible came up so early that I nearly dropped it.

It works in Mac OS 9, and it still works in Mac OS 9, but iDVD 2 in Mac OS X has never worked with external drives.
There was an enabler for iDVD 1 for Mac OS X from OWC, however Apple threatened to make a DMCA claim against it, ironically the DMCA actually explicitly allows for what the enabler does, but when a company 10,000 times your size is threatening you the merits of their case aren't really an issue
DVD-R Upgrades for pre-Superdrive TiBooks? Has anyone heard whether this will happen? Is it even a possibility?

Look for MCE and maybe others to announce at MacWorld Expo San Francisco 2003. I'm sure it will happen. It is already established that it will fit in all TiBooks 550 MHz and up.

just to double check... it is possible to use iDVD on an external drive as long as there is an internal superdrive as well, right?
