you need to find a fw (or usb?) audio breakout box that supports 5.1 speakers...

NOTE the dvd player DOES NOT support 5.1 in any way shape or form...

Check out m-audio's sonica. 5.1 in a teeny little USB module.

So I can use the card above to create 5.1 on things like games, but I need to find another DVD player besides the included one on my Mac to push 5.1?

I guess I will try version tracker, for a cheap DVD program that supports 5.1. Any suggestions would be helpful.

Are there any models similar to the Sonica above that are on a PC card for my tibook?

I really appreciate the help fellas, have a happy holiday.

No. Apple's DVD Player will allow the Sonica to output the 5.1 digital optical to your Dolby Digital or DTS Receiver just fine. It says so in the Sonica Specs on the above page.

apple's dvd player does not support 5.1 output... at all.... the ONLY "surround" output it supports is Dolby Pro Logic

Not if you have a Sonica Attached. You are refering to the analog output. Pro Logic is an analog input/output scheme. But the Sonica is able to extract the Dolby Digital or DTS signal that is hidden in the digital part of the Apple DVD Player's output.

This is a basic DVD player that supports 5.1 and plays VCD's also. It has worked well for me...
