Safari, Software update burning not working

So my friends ibook is giving all kinds of agg. Anyway I made a disk image of her hard drive onto a server so I can burn dvd's of it and I reinstalled from her disks doing an archive install and still the same problems. Am I going to have to reinitialize or are there some more things to try? I'd rather not have to wipe her drive as I'm sure she's got some apps that might be hard to get back.

    1. Double-check the network settings in System Preferences, especially the proxy info.

    2. Try repairing disk permissions with Disk Utility.

    3. Create a fresh account and see if things are OK in that account. If not, the problems are likely to be system-wide.
