Hello,
Networking question. We have an old mac with 8.1 OS and a
newer G4 with 9OS and a new G5 running Panther. We're trying to get a file off of the old mac (8.1OS) and copy it to the either the G4 with 9 or the New G5...
What can I do to accomplish this??
Thanks!!!

If it has a USB port, you can use a USB keydrive.
If it has an ethernet port, you can:
- pick up a cross-over cable and plug it directly from the old Mac to a new Mac, start file-sharing on one, and connect to it from the other.
- alternatively, if you have a router or hub, plug both Macs into it with regular cables.
- Apple file-sharing is compatible between OSX and pre-OSX, so there shouldn't be any headaches there. I used to do it routinely between my OS9 clone and OSX iBook.
If it has a modem, you can dial out and email your file to yourself (many "high-speed" ISPs offer alternative dial-up access).
If it has a CD-R, try that.
If it has a floppy drive, you can beg/borrow a friend's USB floppy drive to get the file onto one of the newer Macs.
If it's running 8.1, I'm guessing it's a mid-generation PowerMac (e.g. 7200). They don't have USB, and may or may not have the other goodies, but should all have ethernet jacks. A crossover cable is probably your easiest bet. You can find them at any computer store.
