Women on the NFL sidelines

Are they too pretty? I remember when the woman invasion happened and there was an outcry from the "old guard" about having women doing field commentary.

I support having women doing this work but I must admit I'm a little concerned. I have immense respect for vets like Suzie Kolber and others but lately I've been seeing a lot of what I'd call "Sideline Kittens" Women that talk a good game of football but look like they should be shopping on Madison ave.

If men want to ogle women they'd never be able to have them let them enjoy the cheerleaders(from a distance). I'm worried that the NFL is going to be too concerned about image and discriminate against women who really know their stuff but don't look like models.

Men have enough eye candy but I doubt you'd speak to many women that get hot n bothered over Al Michaels or Dierdorff. Let's not perpetuate this double standard much longer.

I think this is only a specific example of a more general problem (in the media). This is happening all over the place. For example, I'm sure Katie Couric is a fine journalist, but she hasn't been hurt (at all) by the fact that she is "easy on the eyes".

When will it stop? I suppose when people stop tuning in to one place over another (where the place they tune into is the one with the better looking whoever). Problem is? It's all over the place now.

It's like somebody looked up in the boardroom and said, "who are we trying to fool? We stick woman on there for the guys to ogle. Why not just hire hot bimbos and be done with it? Nobody cares what they say."

For instance, there have been quite a few cable shows that are basically a movie tricked out with host segments. In the past, that would be a "regular joe" guy and a "cute-but-not-too-cute-maybe-a-little-goofy" woman. There always seemed to be some idea about "chemistry", and silly-but-fun banter between the two.

Now there's "DVDs on TV", featuring a "regular joe" guy and a fuck toy. They dress her up in aggressively sexual outfits and pose her (awkwardly) to show off her body. Her job is to keep her shoulders back and smile and say her lines. She might as well be computer generated.

Now I like looking at a pretty girl as much as the next guy, but there's something really depressing about this. It's cold, in the way that most porn is cold. Like the producers are saying, "Here. Tits. Ass. Nice teeth. That's all you wanted, right? Now jerk off and keep watching TV."

It may have to do with market segmentation, allowing television execs to declare certain things "guy TV" without having to worry if they're turning off woman viewers, because they offer a full roster of "gal TV" and can sell ad time accordingly.

Unfortunately, that seems to be creating yet another inbred ghetto where negative characteristics of group are echoed and amplified, creating a feedback loop of "men's television" that starts to look like a fucked-up bachelor party on bad meth.

You mean like that vixen, Tony Siragusa? Truth be told, both make and female sideline reporters during these NFL games are pretty worthless. They don't get or give anything to really chew on.

...and that's a problem. There also seems to be an increase in using former pros who have the IQ of a leaf blower but bring "attitude" to the broadcasts too. Actually, the same goes for the demise of real sports reporters. Some of those guys are so busy primping for the cameras and sending text messages of their 600-word sports column that they thumbed in on their Blackberry, that they don't even talk to player or coaches, don't attend games, hardly even watch games on TV.

And it's only taken me 4400 freakin' posts. Not including my "lost" posts pre Blackout (heh heh)

Addabox- that post was a riot..but so pathetically true.

I don't want say that some of these women didn't earn the spot but I just don't feel that they are passionate about football. There are a few that I think really know the game but soon there will be nothing but kittens roaming the sideline and as BuonRotto says ex players with little to offer themselves.

But, but, but... who would Namath have to drunkenly hit on then?

(To be fair, it looked like somebody sobered him up for last week's post game trophy presentation versus last year's MNF "Ijushtwantokissyou" live debacle)

The thing is, the sideline commentators really aren't that great looking. Maybe it's just the unadulterated 1080 HD stream that's bringing out the pits in their faces, but they're not good looking enough for me to want them to being doing their job.

I would put big money on the suggested fact that some womens' group threatened all sorts of legal fallout if women didn't get representation during NFL games, and that's how it started.

Moving along, I'm really growing tired of American game commentary after seeing how they do it in England for footbal/soccer. Granted, the pace of the game makes the appropriate style different, but regardless, there's an option to hear the whole game commented by two hardcore fans, one for each team, that are picked before the game and slung into a booth. Now that's what I call reality TV.

...because some womens' group *demanded* that only relatively good-looking women do sideline coverage.

evidence exhibit #1: (not even from the sideline, but the studio): the utter twit they have do the "weather report" for the fox football sports lead-in show.

almost every person in that studio needs to be fired...

The thing is, if it were an outgrowth of the "sex sells" department, it should be handled a lot differently than the way it is. Someone important made a mandate about equal opportunity. . . It just doesn't seem all that likely that, all of the sudden, there was this huge abundance of decent looking women who really wanted to be sideline reporters for NFL games. All of the networks have female sideline reporters, even for college games, I think.

Where is the old gaurd on execive celebration, I think they need that to be a pentalty in the NFL, Where are the pureists when it comes to the excruciateing over use of computer graphics, and instant replays and retarded crowd shots, I know that I am watching CBS, I do not need to see a sign that says

    "Come on,

    Beat 'em

    Stealers"

there are a lot bigger things wrong with nfl broadcasting than women, hell they make it better, IMHO.

If you want boobs out of football, start with John Madden...that I would support

the first on the firing line for me would be jimmy "i restate the obvious to act like i am contributing and earning my paycheck rather than get another coaching job where i won't succeed because i won't have the insane luck to have the same inordinate amount of talent on my team and get the vikings to be stupid enough to take a herschel walker off my hands for a ridiculous number of draft picks to build my dynasty and secure my place in the hall of fame" johnson...
