I've seen it warn me before buying a song twice. However, my computer hadn't gone through the trauma of a crash.

exactly. It used to now it doesn't

I have tried to move all of the protected AAC files to the purchased music playlist but that doesn't stop a re-download.

Im not sure what you mean. If you want to see all of the songs you have purchased go to Music Store->Click on your Name->View Account Info->Purchased History

If you want to keep track of all of your purchased songs you can make a new playlist called "Purchased" and put them in that.

yes, yes, but what happens when you try to buy a duplicate song on itms?

it gives you a pop up warning telling you that you have bought that song before.

After my crash I don't get that message.
