New AirPort card?

in Current Mac Hardware edited January 2014
Several German Mac shops report that a new AirPort card will be intro'ed on January 30th, replacing the current one and enhancing compatibility to AirPort Extreme base stations.

Any evidence? Should I wait until end of January with buying an AirPort (11 MBit) card for my iBook?

Yes you shoud wait. I think its really strange for Apple not to release AirPort Extreme-cards to older Macs. there's no technical reason not to, and certainly no commecial reason not to. so.. I'd wait.

They might have done odd solution for the PowerBook 17 because the of lack of internal space, but there should be no such reason for them not to go the usual way for Power Macs, iMacs and eMacs. Ample of room for a PCCard.

Oh, thats good to know. I was a bit ticked off when Apple introduced the new airport stuff that wouldnt work with existing macs. My iMac is only a couple of months old.

There's a 2-4 week shipping estimate for the 802.11b Airport Cards at the online apple store...

    Hoping for an update!!

That may not be true. Several people claim to know that the old AirPort slot does not carry 54 MBit properly.

I hope some form of new AirPort card is released for existing Macs. As I understand it, if any 802.11b device is connected to an AirPort Extreme basestation, all other devices connected to the basestation have to operate at 11Mbps, even if they have AirPort extreme cards.

Perhaps enhanced compatibility means a card supporting more than 11Mbps, but not the full 54Mbps.

Any chance they would include bluetooth? Other than that I would have no reason to upgrade.
