Users and disc permissions

I have 20 macs in a lab environment running among other apps, FCP Pro. I had in the past, created a login for each student resing locally on each machine (so 3 or 4 students each on a computer). I had created folders for each student on the external hard drive and set up FCP within each login to specify the capture / rendering folder locations.

Then I set the permissions on each folder to be owned by a particular student's login so that other students can't accidentially erase another's work.

After that, I get these random quits from FCP. I have called apple and they have never seen the error messages. All I know is that if I delete the user's account and then recreate it, they can start FCP. Unfortunately, it then causes a different user to be unable to start FCP. This is happening on multiple computers.

Anyone know what might be going on? They are all dual g4's with external LaCie hd's.

On a related note, what is the best way for me to setup the lab as to protect student's work from each other? I do have an os x server I can use. Anyone have any resources they can point me to?

THanks,

Mike
