mini-PCI in PowerBooks

Hey people

I was just wondering if you could use standard PCI cards in the PowerBook G4s or if you have to buy special mac versions. Never had a mac that had PCI slots before (I've been using macs since 1991!!)

errr... I hope you mean PCMCIA

It's physically impossible to fit a PCI card into a laptop.

Powerbooks support up to PCMCIA I & II (size)

yeah i do mean PCMCIA but it's too long! cool thnanks for the info. OK, what I really want to know is can i go into a shop and buy an old PCMCIA card and put it in my powerbook or do I have to be more careful - and make sure it specifically says Mac on it?

Depends on the card you want, most HD, card readers, Wireless, Bluetooth, Phone Cards work with the Powerbook but you should do some research before you buy. What do you want, maybe one of us has already tried it or is using it.

A full size card, maybe , but thre is a Mini PCI specification. I don't think that PowerBooks support mini-PCI.

a HD would be cool as would a multi memory card reader (CF, SM, etc.). The PowerBook comes wiht bluetooth, FW and 802.11g so i don't need any of those, although you could use a PCMCIA as a hub - is that correct?

Wow, can we make this thread even more confusing?

Mini-PCI is not the same as PCI is not the same as PCMCIA.

    Please say what you mean!

Using PCI as a shortform for PCMCIA is just confusing.

ok, forgot about that!!! I don't know the difference between them all. I didn't think they were called PCI but couldn't be bothered to find out so called them mini

you don't have to if you don't want to. I thought everybody would understand and I did not realise you could actually get mini PCI cards. OK? If you can't be bothered to help, don't. I really don't mind.

Actually, the PowerBooks DO have Mini-PCI slots, well, slot...

See, there is just one of them, and it is populated by the AirPort Extreme card...

    Duh...

right, well anyway, I'm sorry the title is misleading, if a mod wants to change it to PCMCIA that would be good as that is what I mean.
