12" Powerbooks in the Apple Stores

Just in case any of you wanted to know, the Apple stores now have a demo model of the 12" PB. I got to play around with one for a minute earlier tonight. It's really just like I imagined it. It was fast and really cool looking. Like I figured I would, I really liked the new keyboard. Felt really good compared to the older ones on the Tis and iBooks.

Sorry murbot, no pics. Maybe next time.

Edit: It was also really hot.

Really hot eh? I thought the hard annodized aluminum was supposed to relieve that? No big deal I guess.

Right now really hot doesn't sound too bad. Been way way way too cold here this week.

But anyway, please post anything and everything about your experiences with the 12". I'm dying to hear more about them, like actual people reviewing it. Put more good stories up, you'll have yourself another switcher

Currently visiting the US (from Hong Kong) and went shopping at Southpoint (NC) - there is an Apple Store there. They had a demo 12" running - asked the sales rep if they had any in stock - turns out they had 3......too much to resist, so I bought one.

Feedback so far: - Keyboard has aluminium keys - absolutely superb feel. The case is very very robust (much more so than the TiBook). Fan has not yet run (don't know if there is a actually a fan installed?) - the case becomes a little warm. Runs reasonably fast (256MB RAM - they did not have extra RAM in stock) - I plan to upgrade this ASAP.

So far, it seems to be a sensational product - well done Apple. This looks like a megahit.

The only reservation I have about the product is its screen. I prefer the brighter and sharper 15" TiBook's screen. I think you can really tell the difference when the iBook and tiBook are right next to each other. But besides that....

I played with one at the Apple Store near me today. Beautiful and very sturdy. It's a winner.

I had an icebook and I recall the screen being brighter than the Ti. I know the later Ti versions got better but I have a hard time with that observation.

Come on guys. Dish out some more goodies. Let us know more about what you saw. I am so jealous.

Only in Vermont. I could get the "student" price which is $100 off but after 6% tax in Michigan the price is the same as <a href="http://www.smalldog.com"; target="_blank">SmallDog.

Plus I needed other stuff too.

Then I'll definately be getting my powerbook with them... I always hated how apple.com charges sales tax.... one of the few internet sites that does.

If your state doesn't charge Sales Tax (like mine) and has a place of business in your state (like an Apple Store), I don't think they can charge you Sales Tax.

I wonder what happens if you were to order from the Apple Retail store's web site? Would they charge tax then?

Everyone selling on the net can charge state sales tax if they want to. They just don't have to with well known exceptions. There's a whole USSC ruling on it going back to olde time mail order. In these days there's no "good" reason why they can't charge tax so I expect things to change sooner or later.

    [edit to add]

Apple's been charging sales tax long before the Apple Stores have been around.
