os x over os 9?

it's been so long since i've installed an os x system over a os 9 system that i've forgotten if you need to do a complete disk wipe. i have to put os x on a friend's old tangerine imac and he doesn't have backups. it doesn't have firewire so it's not easy for me to just plug in and grab his stuff. how does that os x over os 9 thing go again? can i do an equivalent of archive and install or does it just use the os9 folder as classic? thanks.

    That sounds like an old enough computer to use a regular OS 9 CD that you would boot via holding down the C key.
