mp3tunes.com

I'm surprised there's no thread about this already, but I can't see one so here goes:

Anyone checked out http://mp3tunes.com yet?

I have to say that I like Michael Robertson, he is quite clearly a mentalist of the first order, but he's a mentalist that likes pissing off Bill Gates so that makes him A-OK by my book.

Plus opening a store with no DRM is quite possibly a stroke of genius (at the very least tracks will work with the worlds #1 portable audio device, the iPod, which most others can't claim), and I'd like to see this approach succeed wildly to keep everyone else honest as far as abusing DRM.

You can read about the launch in Robertson's own words here:

I also continue to be amused by his companies cheap rip-offs of Apple's look'n'feel, mp3tunes naturally looks exactly like iTMS then there is:

http://info.linspire.com/lphoto/ Lphoto= iPhoto

http://info.linspire.com/lsongs/ Lsongs = iTunes (I believe this was originally ltunes, but that must have been too close a call)

Their homepage http://linspire.com/ has a familiar look about it too.

I kind of assumed that most of the content would be unheard of rubbish but I've found at least one album I own:

Golden Age of the Radio by Josh Ritter

I don't know if that means my taste is weird or that mainstream artists don't give a monkeys about DRM as long as they get paid.

I do find it funny how similar the interface looks the iTMS. I am about to go see if they have any songs i want

The biggest compliment they can give you is trying to be like you. So, good for Apple.

This guy already has experience in dealing with mp3's.. I think he was the original founder of mp3.com

    Its interesting what he's doing.

Oh yah, i absolutely agree. You know what they say, Good web-designers create, Great web-designers copy!

anyway, The are certainly a cool company. if there is a song i am looking for, i will look there before iTMS but chances are, MP3tunes won't have it and iTMS will.

sad but true: 192k mp3 beats the hell out of 128k aac. Tell you the truth, ITMS needs to go to a variable bitrate aac, say 128 to 256k AAC, that would be killer, the quality would be superb, and I could then buy from itms without feeling ripped off by the piss quality.

Now mp3tunes is offering online backup of music for $40/year. From what I gather, you can sync up from within iTunes itself and listen to your backed up music through any web browser. Anyone tried it yet?

128-AAC isn;t really that bad. Most people in blind test can't hear a difference.

I challenge you to prove that in a blind test.
