INGENIOUS new feature that should be on the iPod (mini)... i don't think it is

Hey all,

i've just thought of a great feature that should be in the iPod and iPod minis - i don't think it is, as i don't yet have one.

ok, it relates to searching for a song...

for example i have a song titled

Where's Your Head At (Stanton Warriors Mix) - (Artitst) Basement Jaxx

so it's clearly a Basement Jaxx song that's been remixed by the Stanton Warriors, but if were to search for other remixes by the Stanton Warriors that i might have i'd have to search through all my track titles....

so what you should be able to do is highligh a particular word or phrase in a track titles, or artist name (by clicking on the menu button and spinin the wheel clock wise/anti-clock wise to select/deselect the text) and then press the menu button again and it would give you choice to search for songs containing the selected text in their titles, or in the artist catergories, etc.....

and i think all it would require is a firware update to get the iPods to do this, as all the relevant buttons and iformation should already be there...

now for all i know Apple has already thought of this and im just too iggnorant to know about it....

any comments anyone?

thanks

i've had another thought... can you swap music from one iPod to another?

for example, if i were to take my iPod (presuming i had one) to school, and someone else had one too, could we plug in a firewire or USB cord directly into the iPods and swap songs?

    just a thought....

There's this thing called "music piracy" that companies are a little sensitive of, so, don't expect this anytime soon.

yeah i thought of that... but it'd be great to share music around and hear some new stuff.... but that was a secondary thought...

my primary thought was the music searching feature

I don't really understand how the highlighting would work, how do you stop and start the highilighting?

    From your example:

Where's Your Head At (Stanton Warriors Mix) - (Artitst) Basement Jaxx

how do I just select the Stanton Warriors part? This could involve clicking buttons loads of times and sounds like a bad (un-apple) UI.

Don't get me wrong, the idea sounds good just I don't know how it could be implemented in a sensible fashion.

well i guess you would have to click the will to initiate the feature, then you scroll the wheel untill you come to the start of the section of the title you want, for example the S in "stanton" in "Where's Your Head At? (Stanton Warriors Mix)" and then you click the wheel to say make it start highlighting, then you scroll along till the 'n' in "stanton". then click the wheel again to start searching....

it does sound like a bit in writing, but in reality i don't think it would seem too complex...

all you need to do is find the text you want (by searching through albums, artists or track titles) then, choose to highlight, highlight, then search... done.

well it's better to have the option for doing this and not using the feature than to never even have the feature offered. Im sure i'd make a lot of use of it

This sounds great and all, but it is no good unless I can get some refs for freeipod.com[/obligitory troll]

this sounds cool and all, but I fear it would complicate the interface that is now the defacto industry standard bearer, but if it can be done, Apple engineers will find a way, if you wanted to search, while useing a playlist, without jumping back a few menus, you would need a hot key, that means more cluttered hardware too.

maybe they could call it "podlight - spotlight on the ipod"

Just post in iTunes your genre as remix by (remixer), browse by genre.

That only solves a specific problem and can't be done on the iPod alone, dynamically.

I think at best there could be a keyword browse function. Browse the text from the ID3 tags.

    I don't need it, though.

If they are going to have a searchable UI like he wants, they might as well make it a full-fledged PDA.

hey, great name. Is there any (free)third-party firmware out there for the iPod? And is it possible that someone will develop such a feature as we've talked about?

    thanks all

I'd simply like a "Jump to this Artist" (or Album) feature, similar to how option-clicking the little gray arrows in iTunes work -- i.e. creating a kind of instant filter.

That'd be great when using Shuffle to see what I'm in the mood to listen to, as I often do.
