Backup Smart?

I was thinking... I am going to be backing up files soon, and just copying stuff to my iPod when I go to switch out my hard drive for a clean install (Probably read that from previous posts) but I was wondering if I created aliases to everything, that I could have a common backup folder, that when copied over to my iPod (Or whatever I may use for backing up) the actual files would be copied and therefore wouldn't take up excessive space, and would update their selves.

Let me know if this works.

Well it looks like it just copies the information and not the data otherwise my iPhoto library would have outdone the CDR...

Hmm... any suggestions? This would be a great feature.

When you copy aliases, only the alias is copied. You could make hard links from the command line (ln) which act as the files themselves, and that would work, but I'm not sure how well the Finder displays hard links.
