So if the PowerMacs have essentially been downgraded, does this mean that there is the possiblity that there are newer, faster machines waiting in the wings? As a graphics person I have been anticipating going with a dual-processor machine for my next desktop upgrade (or perhaps the rumored IBM machines in 2004).
Why would there be a downgrade unless there's something faster on the horizon? From the amount of chatter I've heard so far, the Mac community is hearing yet MORE death knells for the pro line.
Where's the silver lining?

I expect it to tide us over until MWNY-ish, when we'll either get an early 970 (perhaps with delayed shipping) or a faster 7457 G4 (in which case it'll be a press release upgrade, and it could come at any time - though probably not sooner than 90 days at the absolute earliest).
The dual 1.25GHz is the sweet spot in the new models, IMO.
The death knells for the PM will continue to toll until Apple is shipping PowerMacs that have ten times the performance - measured unanimously by all benchmarks, regardless of bias - at one tenth the price. I wouldn't spend much time listening to those. The current upgrade should keep the PM line selling adequately, if not flying off the shelves. If you need one, buy one.
