Mail will not send

I have been using Mail for awhile now and it suddenly will no longer send e-mails. It is set up to use my ISP's SMTP authenticated server as it has been for over two years now but it suddenly will not send. It usually gives the typical error message but it also will sometimes look as if it is connecting, play the typical swoosh send sound and then the e-mail will remain in the Outbox unsent. Does anybody have any suggestions?
