Know of any way to disable the keyboard eject key? Preferably an app or something easiliy switchable. it's mainly for at night when i'm typing in bed with my roomate sleeping (my typing doesn't wake him up but the opening of the cd drive as i accidentally hit the key sometimes can). I've done the google thing and checked macosxhins and haven't found anything.

what are you typing all the way up and over by the eject key? and honestly, if a cd drive wakes him up, then he has bigger problems than you staying up late typing.

usually happens when moving the keyboard and often the cd drive hits shit and knocks stuff over. anyway I don't need a breakdown of his habits or what i shouldn't put in front of the cd drive but just a software solution to disable it.

well instead of a software solution, just dont put things in front of the cd tray, and it wont knock stuff over. i'm jsut trying to give you the easiest solution.

it's annoying as hell when i accidentally hit the key when moving the keyboard around. i have limited desk space and i rarely change cds or dvds. I desire a software solution. If you have one, great...I didn't ask for easiest. I'm not looking for "buy your roommate earplugs" or "don't stack stuff where you want to stack stuff" solutions.

take off the eject key at night by using a screw driver to lever the button.

try removing the eject key at night. You can use a small screw driver and the lever the eject key off.

That can't be good for the keyboard doing that every night.

Anyone have any software ideas? I can't believe no one else wants to do this.

well you could just leave it off. If it's a full-size keyboard it isn't bad for it. that software doesn't work on newer versions of the OS though!

    Okay, true.

But it was an attempt to answer his question as opposed to physical "solutions" and typing/sleeping critiques.

    Try:

    http://doublecommand.sourceforge.net/

(evolved from the now opensourced iJect, in fact)

Says: "added F12 and eject swapping" and works for 10.3 Panther.

Software is better but I often find hacks unstable. I have removed all the keys from my keyboard a number of times and thought it would do the job.

Of course removing the key would "work", but he said he preferred a software solution.

    But I hate those...

Patient: "Doctor, my leg hurts when I do this..."

    Doctor: "Don't do that."

    ...kind of answers.

in this case it'd be like:

"doctor, my leg hurts because i keep hitting it with a hammer."

"well stop hitting yourself with a hammer"

this is common sense stuff we're talking about.

So do I, that's why I was trying to think of a practical solution!

Did either of you ever read BR's responses? \ he clearly didn't want such "answers" or "workarounds".

We can argue in another thread whether he's rude to make strict demands on those of us trying to help them in our free time (I don't think he was), but I took the approach of answering his simple direct question with an appropriate answer. 8) Easy.

There might be loads of other software solutions out there too. Just naming the ones I could find easily.

Thanks johnq for the constructive replies. You rock. I'll check out that sourceforge project when I get back from snowboarding this weekend.
