AppleCare

A lot of people really seem to rave about AppleCare and seem to think it's vital. It would add a fair bit to the price for me though... is it really so vital? Surely Macs are reliable enough that I don't have to worry too much about extending the warranty??

Any input?

    Laptop or Desktop?

Laptop, definitely as it is woefully expensive to fix.

You have a year before you have to make your decision so see how your machine is panning out.

It'll be a desktop. I guess the phone support will be most useful as a first-time Mac user, and I know it's limited to 90 days if you don't get AppleCare. Depends how good it is really.

I rarely use the phone support, but it's been OK (give it a B) when I have. Applecare is reasonably priced (compared to most 'extended warranties') and really provides peace of mind. My iMac died (probably because of an electrical surge) and needed a new Logic Board, which I believe was over $800 to repair. With Applecare, I had it back in a day for no charge.

Most likely, you'll never need the hardware protection, but I like knowing that it's there.

hmm interesting. Lady at my local apple authorized retailer said they don't cover surges tho they probably can't tell so if its not a big one they'll fix it. Sounded like bs as most places that sell extended warranties cover surges but i dunno.

If apple care does cover it i think i'm going to get it on my powerbook in a few months, it only costs me 240 since i am a student.

They actually told me it wouldn't be covered (I'm in Florida and it was just after the hurricanes) since it was probably a power surge, that it would take a week to fix, and to leave it and they'd call me to say for sure... Then, after I e-mailed Apple (from the store) and whomever got the e-mail in customer care saw how much $$$ I spend with Apple, they called the next day to say the repair was ready at no charge.

It's good to be the king.
