We recommend a minimum memory total of at least 512MB. And since your Apple iMac (G4-1GHz PC2100 DDR) supports up to 1024MB of memory, you may want to install even more, especially if you work with several programs at a time or use memory-intensive software, such as image-editing software.
(Keep in mind that sometimes BIOS updates and other hardware configurations can alter memory recommendations.)

Well I thought you could add 1GB to make up to 1.25GB. Maybe I'm wrong. I'll read the PDF.
Oh right, ok. I was wrong. You can technically add up to 2GB to your system, I think because the SO-DIMM cards used are now up to 1GB. However, I may be wrong.
The computer was made with two slots but one is facotry only and cannot be altered. If you want 1GB RAM you need to replace the 256MB module with 512MB and this requires an Apple Service Provider.

I currently have 256 + 512 in user slot.
Thanks!
you can add more. If I'm correct the iMacs have one slot for RAM. So you'd have to remove the 512MB which is already there.
Here's an Apple PDF and weblink telling you more:

Not a bad price at $204 either...
