ipod: is it new or refurb?

I sent my ipod in for replacement last month and it just came back today. But I'm curious...how can I tell if it's new or refurbished? It came shrink wrapped and looks brand new, but the clicker is really loud and the wheel seems lopsided. Can anyone provide some insight here?

    If it has a clear, perfect sheen on the back... it's new.



    You can't even put the thing into a case without scuffing it a little bit.

    Is the serial number indicative of when it was made/sold?
