SCANNERS : Which Way To Go?

I've struggled (unsuccessfully) to find drivers to get my portable Canon 630Ui scanner to work with OS X, which makes me curious as to what everyone's thoughts are on the brands/models that are looking like good, solid choices now. My instinct is to go HP.

The OS X scanner debacle is surely beginning to resolve itself now.....so which way is the wind blowing?

For High End?

For Consumer-Grade?

    Hello,

In the March 2003 issue of Macworld there is a review of six OS X-compatible flatbed scanners. The following is the ratings that were given, along with their prices:

    Canon CanoScan 5000 F ($200) - 2.5 (out of 5)

    Canon LiDE 30 ($100) - 3.5

    Epson Perfection 1260 ($99) - 2.5

    Epson Perfection 2400 Photo ($229) - 4.0

    HP Scanjet 3500c ($100) - 3.0

    HP Scanjet 5500c ($300) - 4.0

Both the Canon LiDE 30 and Epson Perfection 2400 Photo were selected as "Editors' Choice".

I believe the article will eventually appear online, but of course you can visit your local bookstore or borrow the latest issue from a friend.

Drewprops, I hear Vuescan <a href="http://www.versiontracker.com/moreinfo.fcgi?id=7610&db=mac"; target="_blank">VueScan</a> lets you scan with an entire range of printers that don't come with OS X drivers. I guess you should give that a try before you give up.

Yes, Vuescan is a very useful utility.

I have a Canon N1240U (similar to Lide30) and was peeved to find that there were no OS X drivers so I tried and eventually bought Vuescan and am very happy with it.

Its got a really good interface and easy to set up and use and you pay for it once and enjoy future upgrades free (Vuescan is updated regularly and more scanners being supported all the time).
