cd/dvd reading problem

My G4 Powerbook will no longer read a CD or DVD. I can hear the player spin up but the CD/DVD image never shows up on the Desktop. DVD Player will not launch automatically. The CD doesn't show up in iTunes either. To eject the disc I use the CONTROLS-EJECT DISC menu in iTunes. I then need to enter my password and the disc will eject. Any ideas?

    Presumably this used to work.

    My first thought is a problem with the drive. Try cleaning it. There may simply be some crud on the lens.

    That password to eject the disk is throwing up a flag for me. Could there be a permission thing going on and the user doesn't have permission to access the disk?
